Ready for Passion for Justice
Last Thursday I had my first meeting of the year with Carlotta Gurl. She is so excited to be back performing at Passion for Justice. This year, we decided that we would expand the drag show and ask Carlotta if she has two other drag performers she enjoyed working with. When I posed the question to Carlotta, her eyes lit up and she responded, “Oh Honey! I know some amazing girls!” The conversation took off from there – Carlotta was throwing out ideas, planning the acts, talking about the fun she had last year. This year's drag show is going to feature three sets with three performers and if Carlotta’s enthusiasm in our meeting was any indicator, it is going to be totally off the hook.
We are also adding a whole new element this year – DJ K-Tel. Last year, one of the main pieces of feedback we received was that the event ended too early and that people wanted to hang out longer and connect with all the other cool people in attendance. This year, we asked DJ K-Tel to join Passion to add an extra hour to the show for dancing, lounging, and connecting. DJ K-Tel will come on after the drag finale and will provide an opportunity for people to stick around longer and ride out the evening.
Every year we have tons of auction items that make amazing holiday gifts, or personal treats. This year is no different – the auction will include Canucks tickets, Spa packages, clothing, jewelry and get-aways. We have a whole team of Pivot supporters working with progressive businesses to bring in amazing auction items. Speaking of progressive businesses and organizations, we have also added a number of sponsors to the event this year - with CUPE BC returning as our key sponsor. Joining CUPE are Hollyhock Retreat Centre, Whistler Beer, and Communicopia. It is great to be growing a community of progressive organizations that love to mix business with pleasure.
Passion for Justice promises to be an amazing evening of fun, celebration, and social change. With all proceeds supporting Pivot’s community legal work for residents of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, how can you refuse!
